Perspectives on “what is “Self”

Writer: Avra PoelmannAvra Poelmann

Hello beautiful Souls. My message today is a powerful question to us all What is self?

The concept of "self" is complex and can be approached from various perspectives, including philosophical, psychological, and sociological viewpoints. Here are a few perspectives on the self:

Philosophical Perspective:

In philosophy, the self often refers to the individual identity or essence of a person. Philosophers have debated the nature of the self for centuries. Some argue for a continuous and unchanging self, while others posit a more fluid and dynamic concept.

Psychological Perspective:

In psychology, the self is a central concept that encompasses an individual's thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and behaviors. Psychologists often study the self in terms of self-awareness, self-concept, and self-esteem. The self is seen as a multifaceted and evolving aspect of an individual's personality.

Neuroscientific Perspective:

Neuroscientific research explores the neural mechanisms underlying the sense of self. Brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex are implicated in self-awareness and the integration of various aspects of personal identity.

Sociological Perspective:

From a sociological standpoint, the self is shaped by social interactions and cultural influences. Sociologists study how individuals develop a sense of self within the context of society and how social structures impact identity.

Spiritual or Religious Perspective:

Different religious and spiritual traditions offer unique perspectives on the self. For example, Eastern philosophies often emphasize the dissolution of the ego for spiritual enlightenment, while Western religious traditions may focus on the moral and ethical development of the self.

Existential Perspective:

Existentialist philosophy explores the individual's experience of existence and the search for meaning. Existentialists often grapple with questions about the nature of the self and the individual's responsibility in creating their own identity.

Ultimately, the concept of the self is multi-dimensional and can be understood in various ways depending on the context and discipline. It involves a combination of biological, psychological, social, and philosophical elements that contribute to an individual's sense of identity and existence.

I believe "Self" is the observer behind what is observed, The witness of our own life. The non personal consciousness that is inherent is all things. It can be found when our false identification to form is surrendered and when we start to find acceptance of our own truth. An authenticity of our real composition and inner being! It is when we become a person who represents our core values and wholeness. It is our inner voice that we chose to listen to and know it is who we want to be and stop pretending to ourselves. Self is finding what serves us best and making good decisions based on this. When we love unconditionally and set boundaries to establish realness and respect.
